In recent years, saltwater pool systems have sprung up in the media, receiving increasing attention as a viable alternative to traditional chlorine-based pools. Today, we're exploring saltwater pool systems' differences, benefits, and suitability.
Understanding Saltwater Systems
Saltwater systems function by electrolysis to produce chlorine, offering a more balanced and consistent level of sanitization compared to traditional chlorine systems. The salinity in a saltwater pool is only a fraction of that found in the ocean, typically equivalent to a teardrop's saltiness. Saltwater pools produce a purer form of chlorine than traditional systems and prevent the buildup of irritants called chloramines.
The water from a saltwater system feels more natural, smoother, and fresher, and it can be just as sanitary as a chlorinated pool system.
Benefits of Saltwater Systems
One of the most significant advantages of saltwater systems is their gentle impact on the skin and eyes of swimmers, making them particularly suitable for individuals with sensitivities. The minerals found in saltwater, such as magnesium, potassium, and zinc, can benefit certain skin conditions due to their antibacterial properties. You may also find some relief from skin conditions such as psoriasis and reduced allergic responses in the skin. However, saltwater can dry the skin, so following up with a moisturizer after a lengthy saltwater swim is advisable. The drying effects may be more noticeable if you have young children or are prone to dry skin.
You will also immediately notice that a saltwater system does not exhibit the telltale smell of a chlorinated pool. The pool chemicals required to maintain a saltwater system are also usually cheaper than those for chlorinated systems.
Potential Downsides
Saltwater systems offer numerous benefits, but you should consider that the initial installation costs may be higher (although maintenance will be cheaper). Due to the increased risk of corrosion associated with saltwater, you will need to stay diligent with your maintenance or trust in our professionals to maintain your pool for you. Not every pool is suitable for conversion to saltwater, so please consider this prior to installation to avoid disappointment.
Suitability and Health Considerations
Saltwater systems are well-suited to your family if anyone suffers from sensitive skin and eyes, as the softer and gentler water experience is less likely to irritate. Saltwater systems are an excellent choice for children, providing a comfortable and enjoyable swimming experience.
However, if you have health conditions, such as poorly controlled asthma or certain skin conditions, please consult your healthcare professional before opting for a saltwater system. It's essential to consider any potential health issues or medical conditions that may impact the suitability of a saltwater pool for your home.
Saltwater pools can also be risky if you have an implanted medical device like a pacemaker. The electrical current required to extract the chlorine can cause electromagnetic interference. Again, please consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions regarding the safety of a saltwater pool, including your medical history.
Sustainability Considerations
We know many of our customers are concerned with the sustainability of their pools, so we stock a wide range of products and systems that reduce the environmental footprint of your swimming pool. Saltwater systems lessen the need for harsh chemicals, which is excellent news for your family and the environment. While they can be more energy-efficient in the long run, generating chlorine from salt requires electricity, contributing to the system's overall environmental footprint. Additionally, the discharge of saltwater can impact the surrounding ecosystem, as would chlorinated water, so please carefully consider local regulations and the environmental impact if you dispose of pool water.
Is a Saltwater System Right for You?
You should consider various factors before you commit to a saltwater or chlorinated pool. What are your preferences, budget, health-related concerns, and maintenance considerations? Your swimming pool is an investment, so carefully weigh these factors to confidently determine if a saltwater system aligns with your lifestyle and pool maintenance requirements. Ultimately, the goal is to create a swimming environment that not only enhances your enjoyment of the pool but also ensures your and your family's well-being.
